Mix Tape's History Remix

The Perils of Pearl White

I wrote a blog about the word, "cliffhanger" and how it came from New Jersey movie-making. The one movie I mentioned was "The Perils of Pauline." Little did I know at the time that I would find clips on Youtube, lists on wikipedia and the town of Ft. Lee celebrates the movies.
I shared some of these videos with you in the past week.

The star of these movies was Pearl White. What happened to her when the movies ended?

I have good news and bad news. This comes from Wikipedia.

Pearl White started acting at age 6. She toured the country and made movies by the time she was 18. The Perils movies were 20 episodes long. These movies made her a star. She even had a similar series a year later. These movies were not her only hit. On IMDB, she has 243 credits. The woman was always in demand and always made money.
She was so successful that she retired at 24 years old and moved to France.

She did a fair amount of the stuntwork in her movies. Those aches and pains caught up with her and she drank to get over the pain. It's debatable whether or not she wanted to make a comeback later. It didn't work out as she didn't have a striking voice for the talkies. She had also aged naturally, but the alcohol didn't keep her young.

She continued to live in France till her early death in 1938 at age 49. The official cause of death is liver disease.

Today, she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (she got it back when that meant something). She brought us the word, cliffhanger. She was one of the first major stars of movies. Even though Pauline had male help when she was trapped, she was not a helpless damsel in distress.

Pearl White- One of the first stars.
