Get out of the fields!
In Mix Tapes and Stuff, Mix goes into a brownfield to search for the Schuyler Mine. He has a map that shows him the remnants of the opening should be in the field. He doesn't find the mine and has to get out.
Below is an excerpt from Mix Tapes and Stuff. In these paragraphs, Mix tries to fight his way out of the heavy brush and mud in the brownfields.
The grass and weed stalks were so thick that it caught and held him in the air until stalks broke. He dropped toward the ground hung upside down. His leg slid and he heard a snap under his chest. The next thing he realized was that cool mud went into his ears and on the back of his neck. It covered his face and clothes. Everything smelled like sewer. He sat up with his legs crossed under him. Mud slid onto his pants.
A buzz started. Something slid through the grass. He jumped, but his sneaker didn’t move so he couldn’t move.
The trucks drove out of the field. A tractor drove in from the side and knocked over grass. It seemed far away, but Mix could smell the gas engine.
He shoved and pushed through high grass until he reached his bike. The frame stood upright in the mud, but the wheels sunk below the surface. He stood on the bike pedals and tipped over onto broken glass.
There was a squeal under him.
“Rats.”
He jumped up, grabbed the bike and shoved the binder of maps in the waist of his pants. Heavy mud and junk glued together like oatmeal. Cigarette butts surrounded everything. His arms were tired and sore from the work to move. A red splotch at his side got bigger. The ground became solid and the trees cleared. He fell onto the sidewalk and didn’t care that it hurt.
Mud dropped from his clothes in lumps. Green headed flies swarmed around him which should have been out of season. Puddles of pooled mud surrounded his sneakers. The crooks of his knuckles had so much caked-in mud that it felt like he wore gloves. His side oozed blood and mud through his shirt. The maps were a myriad of different colored dirt.
