SNAP POP FIZZ went the speakers
I always liked the song Bang A Gong. The T-Rex version had a groove and sway. The Power Station had guitars, guitars, guitars. It was the kind of song to play loud. The groove T Rex had originated was buried under guitars. It was so LOUD.
I always played the song loud. It was loud in earphones. It was loud in the car.
It was 1992 and I drove down Route 9 listening to the radio. I don't remember what station played the song, but I found the song and I cranked it up. The windows were down. Cool spring breeze went through the car.
The sound dial was turned all the way. Halfway through the song, I heard a snap and small pop. The really loud music stopped. Then came the speaker feedback fuzz. The music still played but it sounded like it came from behind a cone.
I thought I lost my hearing at age 21.
I could still hear the traffic around me and the subtle sounds of music still played. I switched the stations and the sound went worse. A few minutes later one speaker worked. Forget stereo. I had one speaker that couldn't play loud.
That song ruined that car stereo.
I can say I write this with rock n roll pride. I rocked until I blew out the speakers. Isn't that rock n roll? Open windows on a bright day and loud tunes. The song was that good. The speakers weren't.
