1971- Rock Explodes
Mix and his friends were born in 1971. What was going on in the world at that time?
You will want to read Never A Dull Moment 1971 The Year that Rock Exploded by David Hepworth.
This was a big selling book from what I saw at the bookstores. It's now out in paperback.
This was a surprisingly quick read. Each month of the year detailed by what was popular and how that came about and projected to the future. In February 1971, Carol King's Tapestry came out. The author devotes 15 pages to the production, the musicians and the backstory of Carol King. What other albums came out that competed with this album? How did this album affect other singer-songwriters?
The book is about the British music scene so there was a lot of Yes, Rolling Stones, David Bowie. The month of June has bits about Pink Floyd, Traffic, David Bowie and ending with the American Newport Jazz Festival.
What it also did was say how older artists adapted and/or learned the power of their back catalog. 1950s artists became popular touring bands. December 1971, devoted time to Elvis Presley's music at that point. His reassurance from 1968 has slowed. What did that mean to his music? What happened to those 1950s artists that were popular again?
I learned a lot and enjoyed the book. Here's the link:
