Mix Tape's History Remix

Writing about Venom without venom

Mix and Lenny-sorry-Lemmy go to an abandoned building after school. Mix has a tape of hardcore metal and they listen to it while on the drive. One of the bands on that tape is Venom.

Venom was one of the originators and more famous of the black meta genre. This genre of hard rock was never mainstream. You could find them on college radio or really end of the dial radio, never mainstream radio. Years later fans of Venom like Metallica would break through to the mainstream, but never Venom.

Maybe it was the name.

Maybe the genre.

I’m not going to write the usual bio of the band. They have a well done website. venomslegions.com

The thing about the band is it’s a well done site. The lead vocalist, Cronos, wrote a very detailed bio. He was known for writing long concept albums of poetry about hell and satan’s army. Other sites say the members weren’t Satan worshippers, but were into horror and being threatening. Cronos compared his band to other bands so he listened to a lot of different music over the years. Venom weren’t rag-tag sloppy players. Critics said they played loud to cover their deficiencies, but I’ve heard worse. “Buried Alive” starts like a ballad. It becomes almost emo-metal in the middle. “Nightmare” could almost be pop today.

While you may have seen this blog title and thought I would write some wild Satanic things, I really appreciate what this band is capable of musically.
