Spaceballs is still a classic SciFi Movie
Spaceballs and Dragnet were released the same day in June 1987. It’s fitting because these were spoofs. Spaceballs is regarded as a classic and quoted by movie fans. “Ludicrous speed!”
Dragnet had some good moments, but what the hell happened?
Spaceballs wasn’t the first Star Wars spoof. Star War fans will point to Hardware Wars. There were comedy skits on variety shows. This was the first full movie spoof of sci-fi that isn’t insulting to sci-fi.
Mel Brooks helmed one of the best Frankenstein movies while mocking it in “Young Frankenstein.” Decades after its initial release, “Blazing Saddles” makes people talk and feel uncomfortable while being very funny. He spoofed Alfred Hitchcock, history and Nazis. “Spaceballs” had a cast of names that would become recognizable to movie fans, not headliners but solid actors. Rick Moranis already found fame in SCTV. He moved onto to movies, stealing scenes from the big names in “Ghostbusters.”
Daphne Zuniga was poised to be the big name in movies that never quite happened. She was great in “Sure Thing,” made the best out of the “Fly 2” and she had parts in other movies.
Bill Pullman played the straight guy hero. John Candy stole every scene. Joan Rivers was there but luckily not much and only voice work.
Typical Mel Brooks there are funny spot on movie jokes that the Cinemasins people on Youtube would love. There are also dick jokes. Pizza the Hutt.
There is a car dealership in New Jersey called Schwartz Honda. They have been using the “The Schwartz is with you” line for years. Decades later people still quote the movie that much.
Writing this makes me want to watch this again before the sun goes down. Ooh nice dissolve.
