While writing each other ,Joe and Cate start telling each other secrets that they don't tell the friends they have at home. Joe tells his pen pal that he was at a party and kissed a girl.
The pen pals haven't met in person, but they feel close to each other. That closeness is revealed by a diary entry that Cate makes.

Dear Diary,
Joe said all of his friends are jealous of his kiss. I think I’m one of them. I don’t even know what he looks like. I don’t know her. I don’t know what he’s like in school, but I think I know him better than she does. I hope this Jennifer isn’t a bitch. I read about the kiss in a letter. I have no reason to think about it, but I’m thinking about it. He’s my friend and I should be happy that he is happy.
