Pen Pals become friends

In Dear Pen Pal, a boy and a girl are matched up as pen pals in a school project. They live several states apart from each other so they never meet. At first, they don't know how to communicate to each other. Over the course of several letters, they do become close. The change starts around 1982, which his about three years into their writing.

Here is a diary entry from 1982 when things start to change between them.

September 21, 1982

Dear Joe,

Happy Anniversary. We have been writing to each other for three years now. This is the longest friendship I’ve ever had with someone. I was going through my things getting ready for another year of school and I found an old diary. It was all gnarly looking with all dust on it and stuff. I wrote in it about our letters and stuff. It sounds like you didn’t want me for a pen pal when we started. I thought it was too bad that you’re not a girl since we tell secrets and stuff. It feels weird to talk to a boy like I talk to you. We could’ve been best friends if you lived here. I don’t know if I would’ve hung out with you. Whoever heard of a boy and girl being best friends?…
