What kind of bar?
Is it dirty and old?
Is it a new shiny place with strobe lights and shiny floors that reflect light?
Did these bars have certain designs?
Did they have certain architecture to let the average person know that’s what the club was?
I used some real places as inspiration though I did not directly copy anyone.
One such place I used as inspiration was called Cabaret, located in Eatontown, New Jersey. They have since closed.
Cabaret was an older building. It was once red and then yellow siding for a while. They had a bar that encircled the stage. This stage was bar height so a patron looked up to see the dancers faces. There were multicolored spotlights around the stage, the rest of the bar was dark, but there were overhead lights also. The floors were black and bland. I couldn't tell you the what color the walls were. The alcohol was found next to the bar between the bar and the stage. They served mostly beer, but some hard drinks. They even served food. A patron could smell the grease if they sat near the kitchen. As a way to get people there in the day, they had a buffet. I couldn't tell you what they served.
Cabaret didn’t have space for lap dances and separate party rooms. A dancer walked off the stage and walked around the inside of the bar to search for tips. She would have to reach over the alcohol to reach the customer and vice-versa.
This was the kind of place that had air conditioning, but there were giant fans. Dancers still found themselves covered in shimmering sweat.
Here are some pictures of the place that housed Cabaret. As noted earlier, it has closed down.
Notice the dumpsters in the back. Remember who was found in dumpster in Dream Dancing? You can find the answer by going to Amazon and getting a copy of Dream Dancing. Your opinions and comments are always welcome.
