Election Day Jams
Today is a day of anticipation. It's a day of raw nerves. It should be a day of joy in our democracy, but somewhere this became rough. Because this federal election was two years in the making, a lot of us are sick of it.
When we go to the polls or come home we should still feel good about ourselves and our vote. I listed some of the songs I think are appropriate for today.
The Mix Tape series of books take place in 1986 and 1987 so he wouldn't know all the tunes I'm going to include here. This post is more in the spirit of the things Mix Tape knows and enjoys.
1. They Might Be Giants--Vote or Don't
2. While we're listening to They Might Be Giants I have a second song. Tippecanoe and Tyler Too was a political song from the 1840 election. That sounds like a drag, but under TMBG's hands, this tune rocks. Let's feel smart about our country with this.
3. REM- Ignoreland. This is a rant-protest song. It's about the 1980 election and how Micheal Stipe felt about Reagan as President. REM was known as Byrd's type band in melody or they were folky or they were poppy. This song is loud and is a flat out rock song.
4. Radiohead-Electioneering
5. Tiffany Trump- Like a Bird. It's odd that this hasn't got any airplay. I don't know if they play this song at Trump rallys.
6. The Fixx- Opinions- A song about opinions. We've certainly heard a bunch of opinions in the past year.
7. Arcadia- Election Day.
8. Re-flex--The Politics of Dancing. Ok not at all relevant to today. As I noted above, there are a lot of people not happy with our government and the systems in play. Today is your chance to have your say. You should feel happy and dance about that.
9. Alice Cooper- Elected. If modern radio wasn't so sad and bland, you would hear this song all day long. You would hear this like you hear "New Year's Day" by U2 every year. Alice Cooper was know more for his shocking horror concerts and his stage name than a lot of his songs. This song is rock. The tune is good. You know he's almost laughing at the prospect of his character elected to anything.
The song almost says this. He's having a good time. Let's fist pump with Alice Cooper and play this loud.
Wednesday morning, we are going to wake up. Many will ask questions about the election. Why? How? When? Can we celebrate? How can you celebrate?
You'll have your views and I'll have mine. Maybe it's the same. Maybe it's not. When I go to the convenience store, I'll hold the door for you. You'll do the same. Facebook will have less posts for a while. Twitter will have different posts. We all here together in this country and this world.
So for Wednesday morning, I'm thinking we should play a song by a band called War. They had a big hit song with "Why Can't We be Friends?" This song recognizes welfare, CIA spying, racism and asks why can't be friends int this world.
Hope you enjoy the songs. Don't forget to vote. If you're in line and need something to read, don't forget Mix Tapes and Stuff and Mix Tapes and Stolen Tests are available at Amazon.com
