Blondie Changed with the times..back then
The Blondie comic strip started in 1930. Wow almost a hundred years ago!
It started with a timely storyline of Blondie being a flapper (progressive woman who in 1930 wore short skirts -revealing knees! Smoked, danced) . She met a rich playboy named Dagwood Bumstead. A few years later, Blondie became the perfect little housewife. Dagwood was disowned by his wealthy family for marrying Blondie. They moved to the suburbs. Dagwood got a job and they started a family.
The comic took off and suddenly there were Blondie movies, Blondie radio shows, and Blondie books.
Dagwood was smart and handy. Blondie was comic relief, but was really the smart one, but she didn’t flaunt it. After World War 2, America became the country of families and houses and cars. The Bumsteads became a symbol of that stability. At this time, Blondie the housewife, shopped and gossiped with neighbors. Dagwood became comic relief.
Their dog had uncontrollable puppies. Blondie gave birth to two children. The children aged to teenagers and stayed there. The puppies’ storylines faded.
In the 1990s as more women became CEOs and business leaders, Blondie opened a catering business. She hired Dagwood for a short spell. He didn’t work out so he went back to JC Dithers Company.
Being an active comic for so many years, the cast grew from just Blondie and Dagwood. The neighbors, the Beasleys are often in storylines. Alexander had friends when he was a mischievous preteen who have since faded. Cookie has unnamed friends. There is Lou the cook, the postman that gets trampled, Elmo the neighborhood kid that befriends the Bumsteads.
The drawing styles changed over the years. They got updated appliances. The fashions changed with the times.
To survive all these years, Blondie was able to update their comic strip while still keeping the main characters.
Has any other comic does this so well for ninety plus years?
